As I drove home last Saturday night approximately 10:30 PM, I became acutely aware of the fact that the streets of Marin were completely asleep. Local restaurants were stacking chairs, the main roads were absent of cars, and it seemed as though everyone was tucking themselves into bed preparing for Netflix’s latest thrill. Even the most mischievous population of Marin (teenagers) weren’t rummaging the parking lots. It got me thinking - while I’m advising clients moving from San Francisco or other metros, I should freshen up my knowledge on the best night life in Marin County. I learned that Marin isn’t dead, it’s just a little tired (aren’t we all?).
I’m not breaking news that Marin is a sleepy place. Growing up here as a teen, the hunger for action was real. We resorted to house parties and Jack in the Box for late night shenanigans. I don’t know if that’s ever going away. The kids will have to continue to get creative. For us bored adults, however, here’s a few fun ideas:
Bungalow Kitchen, Tiburon After Dark. The night does not need to end at Dinner in downtown Tiburon. Frolic your way upstairs at The Bungalow Kitchen every Friday night after 9 PM. Great DJ, cocktail lounge, pool tables. It’s lively and exciting!
Silver Peso is BACK. Marin’s most beloved dive bar is back and more vibrant than ever. 2 AM Club in Mill Valley and Matteucci’s in San Anselmo are also great dives to consider.
Corner Bar, Mill Valley. One of the best cocktail joints in Marin. Open late.
Downtown Fairfax. Possibly the most lively downtown area after hours. Don’t sleep on (no pun intended) any of their establishments w/ live music - Mac’s, Nave’s, Peri’s Tavern.
“It’s a Vibe”. Monthly-ish adult dance parties with local DJ’s. A very very fun time.
Sweetwater Music Hall. Some of the best live music in the Bay Area.
Hopmonk Tavern, Novato. Great vibes, good drinks, and also a great music venue.
Dugout Bar at American Legion. San Anselmo hidden gem for nightlife. Pool tables, great bar, and nice outdoor area under the trees. Next to Memorial Park.
Marin will never compete with San Francisco, but I hope this list brings some respite to those desperately seeking more action. Enjoy!!
